Overview of class
It is often said that the purpose of literature is to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed...but what does this really mean? How can creative nonfiction increase empathy and move beyond cliches of being "inspirational" to help foster deeper connections and understandings of the messy human experience? In this course focusing personal essay and memoir, we will explore--through readings, craft discussions, generative writing, course guests, and workshopping--the complex challenges and responsibilities of writing about oneself as a character and situating one's life experiences amidst the wider human story, transcending nonfiction as merely a vehicle for personal "catharsis" but rather as part of an eternal cross-cultural conversation between authors and their audiences across Time. If you have ever wondered "But why would anyone want to read about me?" this course is for you! May not be audited or taken P/N.
