Overview of class

In this course, we will study poetry critically and creatively from within the discipline, translating what we read into tools for our own writing. We will study the poem's many elements—including its subject, form and context, metaphoric range, line, syntax, meter, and tone—and we will note the way that these elements interact to create the poem's meaning. Such close reading will help us to understand poems as complex entities unfolding both on the page and within the reader's consciousness. While we take note of a poem's accomplishments and risks, we also will consider the nature and range of decision-making employed in the writing of poems. We will examine poetry's music by reading and writing accentual-syllabic verse. May not be audited or taken P/N.
