Overview of class
For students proficient in Spanish, French or Italian. Comparative sociolinguistic and interactive approach to communicative competence emphasizing pronunciation, intonation, sentence structure, and patterns of spoken and written Portuguese.Prerequisite: AP 4 in Spanish, French or Italian; or equivalent on the Language Placement Exam.Prerequisite: AP 4 in Spanish or other Romance Language, or equivalent on the Language Placement Exam, or Instructor Permission.

Learning Objectives
Based on the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines 2012, at the end of Port 115-1 students should be able to:
• Acquire basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the Portuguese language that will enable them to narrate in the present and past.
• Use cultural topics in context for building new vocabulary related to leisure activities, holidays and traditions, workplace and professions.
• Communicate about these topics with appropriate grammatical structures. Special emphasis will be given on narrating in the present and in the past (preterit and imperfect), reflexive verbs and pronouns.
• Formulate oral and written presentations using a limited range of simple phrases and expressions based in very familiar topics
• Develop an understanding and appreciation of Brazilian culture and history, and to make comparisons between these cultures and the students' individual cultures.
• Build the necessary skills for transition to the low-intermediate level of Portuguese 115-2.
