Overview of class
This course provides an introduction to the politics of international justice. We will cover the post-World War II tribunals at Nuremberg and Tokyo, the tribunals for Yugoslavia and Rwanda in the 1990s, the permanent International Criminal Court, and other new "hybrid" tribunals. Students will examine the evolving definitions of atrocity crimes, the reasons why states create international tribunals, and whether these tribunals have been an effective response to atrocity crimes around the world.
