Overview of class

In this course we will be exploring several of the core topics philosophers have addressed in connection with the nature of mind and it place in nature. These include the nature of consciousness, the mind-body problem, the nature of thought and other psychological states, and the nature of the self.

Learning Objectives

In this course the successful student (1) will understand why the mind has attracted philosophers' attention for centuries (if not millenia), (2) will critically engage with leading philosophers' views on some of the perennial questions in the philosophy of mind, and (3) will be able to articulate and defend their own position on at least two of the questions we pose this quarter about such things as the mind-body problem, consciousness, the character of thought, and the nature of the self.
