Overview of class

The increasing ease of computational analysis is transforming the way science is done. Quantitative methods beyond those covered in a first course on scientific statistics are now commonly applied in contemporary neuroscience literature. Engaging with this literature increasingly requires a basic understanding of these methods and how their results should, and should not, be interpreted. This class is intended to help students build this basic understanding. The course is intended for students who have not taken mathematics or data science courses beyond the requirements for the Neuroscience Major. Students who have taken more advanced quantitative coursework may not be challenged. The specific topics covered will be determined through instructor consultation with registered students. Potential topics include principal component analysis, clustering methods, p-value interpretation, tests of normality, nonparametric statistical tests, classifiers and prediction methods. Students must have completed Neuroscience 202 and 206 and met the statistics course requirement for the Neuroscience Major.

Registration Requirements

BIOL_SCI 337-0, BMD_ENG 220-0, CSD 304-0, ES-APPM 375-1, IEMS 201-0, PSYCH 201-0, STAT 202-0, STAT 210-0, or STAT 383-0 and either: NEUROSCI 202-0 and NEUROSCI 206-0; or NEUROSCI 311-0 and NEUROSCI 206-0; or BIOL_SCI 302-0.

If a student has AP credit for any of the statistics courses listed above but cannot register for the course, please email neuroscience@u.northwestern.edu requesting a permission number listing your pre registration time. Terri will issue permission numbers to Neuroscience Majors until the class is full. Waitlists will open up on November 10th.
