Overview of class

This is the second half of a two-quarter, application-only seminar that introduces students to the scholarly practices of the discipline of history. Students will pursue a self-directed research agenda in close consultation with their fellow Sanders Scholars. The seminar will scaffold the task of creating a research essay, incorporating abundant peer feedback and guidance. The goal is to create a powerful statement of one's powers as an independent analyst who can successfully design and complete an entirely new primary-source historical investigation and place it within meaningful historiographical context.

Class meets in Harris 108; open to students accepted into the Sanders seminar; these students should be sent permission numbers for registration.

Learning Objectives

You will learn to:

•Frame research questions to guide you through a complete academic project of your own design;

•Locate, interpret, and incorporate sources that substantiate your contentions, nuance your claims, and tell your story;

•Compose a definitive statement of your conclusions incorporating feedback from the instructor and your fellow Sanders Scholars.

Evaluation Method

Class participation: 20%, Four writing check-in assignments: 40% (10% each), Research essay (40%)

The course meets in Harris 108. Students admitted to Sanders for Fall Quarter should be sent permission numbers that allow them to register for Winter; there is no general registration.
