Overview of class

What does it mean to study sex and sexuality? Where did the idea of sex and sexuality come from? This course explores these questions and more from the perspectives of the humanities and social sciences including history, philosophy and critical theory, psychoanalysis, biology, anthropology, sociology, and literature, among other disciplines. During the first half of the course, students will explore a wide range of texts, films, and images to build an understanding of sexuality studies. In the second half of the course, students will have the opportunity to work in the library's special collections to learn how to engage with primary texts in historical archives. In general, this course provides a strong foundation for future coursework in gender and sexuality studies as well as a survey for students in other fields who wish to explore how sexuality engages their areas of interest.

This course consists of two days of lecture and one day of discussion. Discussion sections are led by GSS graduate teaching assistants.
