Overview of class

This beginning German language course is intended for students from all disciplines who want to develop basic German language skills. There are no prerequisites. The goals of the course include the acquisition of speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills in German, the building of a general vocabulary, a foundation in grammar, and an introduction to culture in the German-speaking regions with a focus on the metropolis Vienna. The course provides an ideal option for students who intend to study abroad and would like a comprehensive introduction to the German language or who want to continue studying German at Northwestern. Students will learn about music, art, architecture, history, and culture in Vienna and German-speaking Europe, and will watch and discuss three films featuring music, art, cuisine, and culture in a Viennese as well as a global context.

Learning Objectives

1. Develop basic speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in German by engaging with material related to everyday life, travel, culture, art, music, and history. Students are prepared to reach a
minimum of the Novice Mid / Novice High level on the ACTFL Scale or the A1/A2 level on the CEFR Scale. The completion of this course
prepares students to continue with the third quarter of Beginning German (1013) or to participate in a number of summer and fall study abroad programs.
2. Acquire conversational skills for every-day interaction and travel.
3. Become acquainted with grammatical structures including all cases and major tenses.
4. Become familiar with German-speaking regions and especially the global city Vienna and its history, its musical, artistic, and cultural life, and its sights.
5. Be able to perform dialogues and a skit or give a presentation at the end of the term. Details will be announced and distributed and discussed during the quarter.
