Overview of class

This course explores the developmental and evolutionary mechanisms that led to the emergence and complexity of multicellular life in animals. Topics include the evolution of multicellularity, cell communication, morphogenesis, and the genetic and molecular mechanisms that drive complexity. We will also examine examples of developmental complexity across major animal phyla and discuss current research in evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo).

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will:
1. Understand the origins and evolutionary significance of multicellular complexity.
2. Understand the genetic and cellular processes underlying development in multicellular organisms.
3. Understand key developmental mechanisms underlying the emergency of pattern and complexity.
4. Understand mechanisms of morphogenesis that underly formation of organs and organisms
5. Apply knowledge of mechanisms and experimental approaches toward understanding specific developmental or evolutionary biology problems
