Overview of class
Graduate-level introduction to magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), i.e., the dynamics of magnetized fluids. Magnetized flows are very common in the universe, such as in the interstellar medium and in and around stars including the Sun, neutron stars, and black holes. Magnetic fields can be dynamically important in the evolution of such systems. They can, for example, affect the process of star formation, and simultaneously drive accretion onto and outflows from central objects.
Topics we will cover include the MHD equations, magnetic field transport, magnetostatic equilibria, hydromagnetic flows, and magnetosonic waves. Example applications include the interstellar medium, magnetospheres, magnetically driven outflows, and the scattering of cosmic rays. We will also briefly discuss applications to controlled thermonuclear fusion.
MHD is closely related to plasma physics, which is necessary to capture the behavior of flows not adequately described in the continuum limit. As time permits, the course will also cover some elements of plasma physics.
The course will emphasize astrophysical applications, but the theory will be developed in a general way and the course could be useful to students in other areas of physics.
Registration Requirements
This course is targeted at graduate students. Students should have a solid foundation in undergraduate electricity & magnetism, at the level of PHYSICS 333 (e.g., the Griffiths textbook).
Students should also have prior experience with the fundamentals of fluid dynamics. ASTRON 416: Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics is sufficient preparation, but it is not required. Students who have taken other courses in fluid dynamics (including at the undergraduate level) or who have significant research experience involving fluids should be able to take this course. Please consult the instructor if unsure.
