Overview of class

An exploration of methods in linguistic anthropology based on analysis at multiple levels of language/communication. The focus is collection, transcription, and analysis of interactions. We will explore the ways in which interactional analysis can help us understand cultural processes (and vice-versa). We assume that as grammar structures interaction, so historical-political formations can affect the action of grammar. Through extended learning of ethnographic methods and linguistic/discursive analysis, we link microsocial and macrosocial processes from an anthropological lens. We will explain how speech is in fact action, and achieves significant social effects. Each student will audio collect original data and become familiar with other students' data, as many sessions will be based around shared data we will work through together as a class.
