Overview of class

Methods in anthropology have advanced rapidly due to the development of ‘omics technology that allows us quickly and cost-effectively generate data describing genomes, epigenomes, metabolomes, and microbiomes. The insights from these tools are transforming our understanding of primate biology and evolution. Nevertheless, there is a risk that researchers will elect to use these cutting-edge tools without fully understanding their advantages and limitations. In this course, we will take a deep dive into the current ‘omics tools that are available to anthropologists and discuss how and when they should be used. The course will leverage discussions of the primary literature, guest lectures, and evaluations of public-facing study descriptions to explore what is possible and what is not in this exciting new landscape. The final product of the course will be a paper and presentation describing how at least one ‘omics tool could be appropriately used with regard to student research questions.
