Overview of class
This course will introduce students to the history and ongoing complications of theatre criticism, as well as criticism's place in contemporary journalism. Practical exercises will focus on reviewing in-person productions in the Chicagoland area through a number of mediums, including traditional newspaper style, TikTok, and audio reviews. Using theatre semiotics as a methodological framework, students will learn to use the elements of performance text, including play analysis, analysis of acting, directing and mise-en-scène, performance time and space, use of technology and media on stage, lighting design and music, among others, in order to craft original works of theatrical criticism.
Class Materials (Suggested)
Students will be responsible for buying tickets to see theatre productions in the Chicagoland area. Exact costs TBD depending on performances chosen and availability of student discounts.
