Overview of class

Using a few of Shakespeare's best-known plays, we will investigate how human experience is expressed through heightened language. In addition to heightened language, as well as the stakes and conditions that demand such heightened language, students will develop performative skills and understanding of rhetorical devices such as antithesis, alliteration, assonance, cacophony/euphony, repetition, polysyllabic/monosyllabic phrasing, metaphor, simile, irony, blank verse, prose etc.

Class Materials (Required)

Shakespeare's texts can be found for free online.
Many modern and contemporary plays that incorporate heightened text may sourced from Northwestern Library or purchased should the student want to start building their script libraries. $26-50
