Overview of class

This course invites students to explore the dynamic world of contemporary Indigenous theatre. We will engage with Indigenous playwrights currently working in the field, as well as analyze texts and theory about America's original storytellers. Students will read plays, develop dramaturgical skills, and interact with working Indigenous artists to gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous theatre as both a cultural practice and artistic form. Together, we will critically and creatively explore the central question: What is Indigenous Theatre?

This class equips students with critical modes of thinking about theatre as an academic discipline and practice. It features a range of analytical skills and critical approaches for play and performance analysis, incorporating aspects of theatre history, historiography, and performance theory. Through class discussions, readings, study of plays and performances, creative responses, and written assignments, students will develop their analytical skills and learn to craft research papers in a guided process.
