Overview of class

This course is the second in a three-quarter MFA sequence in which students focus on creating a thesis project, whether a single-channel film, an installation, or a work of interactive media art. Students should enter the course with principal photography or prototype construction for the thesis project completed, so that they can primarily engage in post-production during Thesis 2. The expectation is for the thesis project to advance from an assembly to a full rough cut, and possibly a fine cut during the quarter. Students will regularly present works-in-progress during class meetings to demonstrate progress and for feedback. We will also address general post-production issues, consider a range of creative strategies, and critically engage with relevant films and readings. Students will leave the class with a fine cut of their thesis so that they are well positioned to achieve picture-lock, sound design and mix, color correction, titling, and exhibition in Thesis 3.

Learning Objectives

As students work towards the completion of thesis projects through post production, they gain conceptual development as editors and bolster their understanding of aesthetics, film structure, and technical skills. Students also develop facility with, and stamina for, providing and receiving critical and generative feedback on works-in-progress.
