Overview of class

Vision and voice are what distinguish one film director from another. In this course students will learn how to define, express, and maintain their unique vision and voice from script to finished film. To this end, we'll break down the director's role from beginning to end, examine the work of cinema professionals known for their unique visions, and dialogue with guest artists on their own experiences and advice. Through specific vocabulary, tools, and examples, we will deepen our understanding of effective direction and build an awareness of how to creatively and respectfully collaborate with the people and departments responsible for fulfilling the director's vision. Students will apply their learning in the creation of a pitch deck for one short narrative film, culminating in a final pitch presentation. Students must arrive on the first day of class with a completed short script (5-19 pages).
