Overview of class
Filmmaking is often seen as a team sport, but there's also a rich history of media artists who have embraced working by themselves and taking creative control of every aspect of production. In this class, students will create their own solo projects which they will take all the way from ideation through production and post-production. This approach is ideally suited for documentary, experimental, and hybrid projects as well as video installations and more poetic or personal work. In addition to covering a range of techniques that are useful in working by oneself, the class will also introduce students to our new Super 8 and Canon C70 cameras. Regular feedback sessions will help students navigate creative and production challenges and we will also view and discuss relevant film examples.
Learning Objectives
Students will learn to develop and complete solo film projects from initial concept through production and post-production. Throughout the process, they will refine their skills in directing, cinematography, and editing, while gaining a deeper understanding of film form and creative storytelling strategies.
