Overview of class
This graduate seminar explores how artificial intelligence and digital media are reshaping the way science is shared, understood, and debated. In an era when scientific findings can be quickly amplified or distorted online, understanding how research circulates through digital platforms is critical for every scholar. Students will engage with recent studies that examine key questions at the intersection of science, communication, and technology:
How does sharing research online affect its visibility, credibility, and citation impact?
If digital reach influences academic recognition, can all scholars participate on equal footing?
How do researchers balance the pressure to promote their work with the need for scientific rigor?
When misinformation about science spreads, how widespread and influential does it become?
And how is AI transforming not only how science is communicated, but also how it is produced?
Throughout the seminar, students will critically analyze these dynamics and develop creative proposals for how digital platforms could be (re)designed to support more effective, equitable, and responsible science communication.
