Overview of class
In this course, we will develop and expand our movement repertoires through serious play, focusing on techniques to generate movement, examining our habitual ways of making, and bouncing ideas off one another. We will explore different entry points into the generative process of movement improvisation and discuss our discoveries through the perspective of other scholars and dance artists. Along with simple and complex movement improvisation games and movement ideas from our technique classes, this course will examine Laban's Movement Analysis System elements to unlock movement options we didn't even realize were possible. We will use scores—movement, musical, sonic, text, and those we create—as collaborative guides to discover and actively question our movement choices, voices, and vocabularies. Our goal is to explore improvisation as a generative and compositional tool in dance-making that encourages dynamic play. Throughout the course, we will keep weekly journals to reflect on our processes and practices and create video archives as data for our explorations.
