Overview of class

Cochlear implants and other implantable hearing devices. Candidacy, device management, and performance with various devices.

Registration Requirements

Currently enrolled in the Doctor of Audiology program or by instructor permission.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe how cochlear implant systems work, the history of their evolution, and what the main limitations of present-day devices are.
2. Describe different types of signal processing in present-day devices, and possible implications for speech perception outcomes.
3. Discuss what factors predict individual variability in outcomes.
4. Discuss outcomes in those with bimodal hearing or bilateral cochlear implants.
5. Discuss how cognition and language in adults and children, developmental factors in children, and aging in adults might influence outcomes with cochlear implants
6. Discuss auditory brainstem implants, how they differ from cochlear implants, and outcomes.
7. Describe new frontiers in research and development in the field.
