Overview of class

Writing for strings. Writing for woodwinds. Writing for brass. Writing for percussion. Writing for harp. Writing for mixed ensembles. Other instruments as deemed appropriate, time permitting.

Registration Requirements

Students must have taken MUS_COMP 314-1: Instrumentation.

Learning Objectives

Students should have a working knowledge of how to take pre-existing music and re-timbralize it for all of the standard orchestral instruments as previously covered in MUS_COMP 314-1.

Teaching Method

Students sharpen their orchestrational skills with weekly short assignments orchestrating excerpts of piano works for a variety of instrumental resources.

Evaluation Method

Assignments will be graded for accuracy in adhering to the intrinsic limits of the standard orchestral instruments (e.g., physically playable multiple stops for strings, sufficient time to insert or remove brass mutes, etcetera). In-class participation in discussion will be a component of the final grade.

Class Materials (Required)

The course will continue to use the textbook that was required by MUS_COMP 314-1: Instrumentation. Other score materials will be provided in class as necessary.

Class Materials (Suggested)

Notation software.
