Overview of class

It is the purpose of this course to introduce methods of quantitative data collection and reporting as well as some very basic statistical techniques employed in data analysis. Emphasis will be placed on the logic of quantitative designs and the ways in which data and analysis can be used to make a reasoned argument for answers to research questions.

Learning Objectives

In this class students will have opportunities to:
• Develop skill in the creation of reliable operational definitions of musical behavior;
• Use and/or create reliable instruments for data collection;
• Explore analytical options in the form of basic statistical procedures;
• Visit examples of experimental and descriptive research in music education;
• Design and report on quantitative observations/experiments;
• Develop a complete quantitative research paper.

Synthesis and application of readings, assignments, final research project
