Overview of class
This course introduces the core principles of Western tonal theory: (1) pitch, scales, keys, intervals and harmony; (2) rhythm, meter and phrase structure; and (3) basic staff notation. Through listening, analysis, and short composition exercises, we will develop practical skills for understanding how tonal music works and how its ideas continue to shape the way we hear and think about music today.
