Overview of class

What roles does music play in shaping our minds, emotions, and sense of self across a lifetime? What is it about music that allows it to play such an impactful role in our lives? Through this course, we will explore music as a human practice linked to wellness and identity. Drawing on research in psychology, neuroscience, sociology, and the arts, students will examine historical and contemporary perspectives on how music has been understood to affect physical and mental health. Through weekly readings, discussions, and listening projects, students will reflect on their personal musical experiences and analyze what it is about music that makes it uniquely powerful. Students will also engage in broader debates about music's social and ethical functions. Through this work, students will develop a deeper appreciation of music's capacity to influence individual and collective flourishing.
