Overview of class

After an introduction to musical fundamentals and jazz terminology, we will survey the genre from its prehistory and origins in New Orleans through the Harlem jazz age, swing, bebop, and fusion, among other styles, on the way to the jazz scene of today.

Registration Requirements

No prerequisites or musical background are required; this course is designed for students who are not music majors.

Learning Objectives

Students will gain a general understanding of the history of jazz through a broad historical overview of the subject, along with the basic music fundamentals required for discussion and analysis of the genre. Through critical listening and reflection, students will learn to identify and analyze elements and characteristics of jazz in its various periods and styles. Students will also become familiar with important musical figures in jazz and their notable discographies.

Teaching Method

Classes will consist of lecture presentations, group discussion, group listening and reflection activities focusing on jazz recordings, and small group activities.

Evaluation Method

Attendance/Participation (30%), Weekly Reading Assessments (25%), Weekly Listening Reflections (25%), Final Paper (20%)
