Overview of class

How do we listen? This course takes a listening-first approach to explore how music and sound contribute to shaping our identities, structuring our relationship to the environment, and regulating our day-to-day moods. As a class our aim will be to interrogate our own listening habits and survey various modes of listening, developing an analytical toolbox to bring to bear on a wide variety of music: from classical music to jazz to popular genres to sound and noise. Students can expect to encounter basic tenets of Western music theory, while also exploring additional techniques of attuning one's listening. In-class learning is discussion-based, with the expectation of weekly reading and listening outside of class time. Assessments will include in-class participation as well as reading quizzes and three choose-your-adventure style creative projects. There is no expectation that students will be able to read music.
