Overview of class

This course examines how music impacts and reflects our everyday lives, particularly in the way it shapes our selfhood, our relationships to our communities, and Western culture at large. Covering myriad genres from classical to pop, students will develop fundamental technical language to analyze what they are hearing, and will explore and critique the sociocultural conditions that surround musical creation. The course is primarily designed around discussion- and activity-based learning. Assessments include weekly reading and listening, participation in in-class and online discussions, and three mini "deep-dive" projects. The ability to read music is not required to take this course.
