Overview of class

Movements and navigation across political, cultural, and linguistic borders characterize the everyday literacies of migrants and children of migrants, particularly in view of nativist and criminalizing rhetoric and policies in many parts of the world. Whereas issues of migration had been sidelined during the pandemic and the closing of state borders, immigrant students continue to be some of the most vulnerable populations in our school system, particularly those who are multiply marginalized by race, home language, poverty, and undocumented status. Climate change, political unrest, and aggravated global inequality will continue to drive migration in the foreseeable future. It is in these contexts, these geographies of power, that educators and researchers can play an important role to envision and enact forms of literacy and everyday practice that respect people's migratory experiences and the transnational resources they bring.
