Overview of class

Colleges and universities must provide empirical evidence that demonstrates how they are achieving their institutional goals and objectives—evidence that moves beyond rhetoric and anecdotally-based reports. Students in this course will examine a variety of ways in which assessment can be implemented to improve higher education. Methodological approaches will be reviewed and critiqued, as will the larger public policy context which brought assessment to the forefront of the nation's higher education agenda. Students will develop a foundational understanding of the scholarship of assessment and a framework for thinking about the circumstances under which assessment can be conducted effectively. This course will provide students with the knowledge and understanding of different assessment types/processes, models as well as the necessary data collection methods to design assessments that are intentional, purposeful, inclusive and focused on improvement. Toward that end, class time and assignments will emphasize how higher education administrators can perform effective, high-quality assessments in a variety of college and university areas.
