Overview of class
This course is designed to address the topic of Teaching Music to Exceptional Children through reading and discussion, learning experiments, and reflection on community engaged service at a local school for students with disabilities. Topics will include U.S. legislation relating to the education of individuals with disabilities, specific disabilities and their impact on student behavior and learning (behavioral disorders, cognitive, speech, and language disorders, autism spectrum disorders, hearing and visual impairments, physical disabilities, person-first language), Universal Design for Learning, and accommodations, adaptations, and differentiation for the music classroom. We will also explore Banks' framework of Multicultural Education and the impact of racial, cultural, socioeconomic, gender, and neurological diversities on teaching and learning. Students will complete 45 minutes of weekly service in a classroom working directly with students with disabilities and their teachers and aides.
