Overview of class

This course surveys the myriad musical cultures, histories, personalities, and styles that have existed on the land known today as Chicago. As a city that has been integral to the cultivation of numerous genres (including and beyond the blues, classical, gospel, and house), Chicago presents a rich context for exploring a range of human musical practices and traditions. This introductory course will combine simple discussions of music with extensive conversations about key sociohistorical themes (dance, gender, migration, politics, race, religion, sexuality, and more). The ability to read music is not required.
