Overview of class
Through lectures, discussions, reading libretti aloud, regular in-class quizzes, and listening assignments in and out of the classroom, students can expect to engage with musical theatre through the lens of analysis, looking at scripts and scores of varying styles and encompassing various periods. We will study pieces adhering to tried and true structures and pieces and authors that have broken those structures. Students will need a device to take notes (digital is fine), a pen to execute in-class quizzes on paper, and a desire to participate in group discussions. This course aims to guide students towards a deep appreciation of the art form of musical theatre through intentional listening skills, curiosity, and rigor around understanding how musicals work.
