Overview of class

Description:
AI Practice for Math

This graduate seminar explores how AI tools can be used in mathematical research, their capabilities and limitations, the questions they raise for mathematical practice, and the ethical use of AI tools.

The course begins with an introduction to how large language models work and how mathematicians are using them. Students then conduct experiments on a set of mathematical problems, comparing different approaches. Individuals may select problems related to their research. Discussions will examine and compare successful and unsuccessful attempts and what students learned from their use of AI.

Meetings will combine presentations of the math output by participants and discussion of assigned readings, departmental panels, and selected colloquia. Readings include the Leiden Declaration, selected entries from Terence Tao's blog, and other texts addressing the interface of AI and mathematics. Topics include mathematical understanding and creativity, disclosure and attribution of AI use, accessibility, the role of mathematics in society and industry, future directions of research, and ethics around AI use.

The syllabus is intentionally flexible so that students interests and difficulties can help shape the seminar.

Expectations: Students are expected to put substantial work into the course outside class. Completing readings, conducting experiments, checking mathematical arguments, and preparing presentations

This meets twice a week, MW 11-1, and includes attendance at selected AI-related colloquia and panels. (Exact class meeting times will be somewhat variable and will average three hours per week.)
