Overview of class
The topic for this Research Seminar is "Scientific Reading, Thinking, and Presentation." Students in this course develop foundational skills for scientific practice and presentation.
Registration Requirements
Graduate standing or consent of the instructor. Class meetings will be split across the fall and spring quarters (1.5 hours per week in each quarter).
Learning Objectives
Fall quarter: Scientific Reading
The fall quarter will be devoted to development of a comprehensive literature review on a topic of the student's choice in consultation with the instructor and/or their primary research advisor. Depending on the student's stage in the PhD program, this may be geared towards one of the major milestones in the Linguistics PhD program (QP, thesis prospectus, or thesis chapter(s)) or this literature review may serve as a vehicle for filling in a gap in the student's background that is tangential to their primary area of research interest.
Spring quarter: Principles of Scientific Presentation
During the spring quarter, students will work on mastering the structures for presenting concepts and data with an emphasis on clarity of thought and expression. These skills will be practiced through a series of written and oral presentations.
Teaching Method
Classes will be run as workshops where students present and critique each other's work.
Evaluation Method
Students must attend this course in both the fall and spring quarters in order to receive one course credit. Class attendance and active participation is essential.
Class Materials (Required)
Readings from the primary literature to be made available on Canvas throughout the quarter.
Class Notes
Forum for developing, presenting, and discussing graduate student research. Pass/no-credit registration required for fall quarter.
