Overview of class

How did Italy get its name? What did it look like, and who lived there before the rise of Rome? This course provides an overview of Italy and the peoples who settled there during the last millennium BCE. Drawing on a wide range of sources (archaeological, linguistic, literary, and epigraphic) we will examine the landscapes, languages, cultural practices, and socio economic and political structures of a variety of indigenous groups, including the Veneti, Etruscans, Samnites, Campanians, and Lucanians, among others, who played an important role in the development of the Italian peninsula before its unification under Roman rule. Particular attention will be given to key factors that shaped the peninsula's historical evolution, including Greek colonization, the rise of aristocracies, technological innovations, the spread of literacy, and processes of urban development.
