PUTIN'S RUSSIA: PERSPECTIVES FROM MOSCOW AND FROM WASHINGTON

The course will explore the rise of Vladimir Putin, from clandestine KGB officer to war-time president, and examine how the Russian public and U.S. policymakers responded along the way to his increasingly authoritarian and aggressive regime. Students will analyze how Putin transformed Russia from the disorganized polity of the 1990s, followed by a phase of stability and relative prosperity, and then into a centralized state that suppresses freedoms within the country and wields military and coercive force against its neighbors and Western adversaries. Finally, we will examine how the war in Ukraine has affected Russia's politics and society, as well as its relationship with the U.S. and the West.
