Overview of class
Topic: The 2005 Hurricane Season
in Fall 2005, Hurricane Katrina was the first of three major hurricanes to hit the Gulf Coast of the southern United States. This course will focus on the storm's impact on the city of New Orleans, and how to write a history of a recent event. Students will research and write a research paper of 15-20 pages, using sources such as government documents, newspapers, documentary films, digital archives, and archived oral histories, among other possibilities.

Attendance at first class mandatory.

Evaluation Method
Class attendance and participation, based on common readings. Research paper, broken into smaller assignments: identifying a topic; secondary source bibliography; proposal with sources; draft of paper; final paper. Presentations: one based on reading; one based on final paper.
