Overview of class

This course is designed to build, develop and improve advanced proficiency in listening, reading, speaking, writing, and intercultural competence in French. Classes will target comprehension and expression skills and reinforce advanced grammatical concepts by exploring a variety of media and genres. This course serves as prerequisite for most other 200 and 300-level French classes.

Registration Requirements

French 201 or placement by the department.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will: read French news articles, read a French novel (with dictionary) with speed and accuracy, watch, interpret, and critique videos and full-length films in French, understand and discuss, both orally and in writing, aspects of contemporary French society, produce a well-conceived paper on a literary or cultural topic.

Teaching Method

Class sessions are considered collaborative workshops and are devoted to conversation, written, and communicative activities that will allow students to explore contemporary French and Francophone cultures. Classes will be conducted exclusively in French except when explanation of grammar or other material may necessitate the use of English. Students are expected to prepare outside of class, and to participate actively in class activities.
