Overview of class

This course examines the biochemical mechanisms through which drugs and toxic substances affect living systems. Students will explore how xenobiotics are processed by the body, including absorption, distribution, metabolism, detoxification, and excretion, and how these processes influence cellular homeostasis. Emphasis is placed on enzyme function, metabolic pathways, oxidative stress, signal transduction, and molecular mechanisms of toxicity. Therapeutic drugs, psychoactive substances, natural toxins, and environmental chemicals will serve as examples to illustrate fundamental biochemical principles and their applications to human health.
