Overview of class

This course provides a deep dive into the concepts of property and inheritance. It queries how property regimes structure much of the world in which we live. Entities ranging from land to airwaves to genes can become property once they are delimited as such. This course asks how such relations of ownership between people and things comes about, further considering how this occurs differently across cultures and history. We read foundational and contemporary scholarly literature on property and inheritance, as well as explore how these concepts are taken up in popular culture, including television shows (like Succession) and films (like Parasite).
