Overview of class
This course will focus on cultural and political expressions and representations of Latinas/os/es in the US. We will draw from historical accounts, ethnographies, and media representations. We will consider how these forms of expression are used to represent U.S. Latina/o/e life. We will examine how ethnography works as a field method and as a form of communication. Our course will cover a broad range of areas and textual modes, so that we may do some comparative work. The class will be conducted as a seminar with most class sessions devoted to discussion rather than lecture. Certain class sessions will be divided into different segments to allow time for students to discuss course material and to develop their projects.
Please note: some classwork will be broken up in segments, allowing you time to review film/media, and participate in discussions online. These sessions, course content, and other aspects of the class may change, given developments within the class and beyond it. Please be patient and help us create the kind of environment that will be most helpful to all enrolled.
