Overview of class
Gospel Choir Repertoire & Performance is a graded ensemble course that explores the historical and cultural foundations of African American gospel music through choral study and public performance. Students engage a broad spectrum of gospel repertoire—from early spirituals and congregational song traditions to contemporary gospel and worship music.
The course situates gospel choir music within its social and historical contexts, tracing its development from the spirituals of the nineteenth century, through the Great Migration, revivalist movements, and the emergence of modern gospel choirs. Repertoire is studied with attention to stylistic authenticity, vocal technique, improvisation, call-and-response practices, rhythmic interpretation, diction, and performance practice traditions rooted in the Black church.
Students will develop advanced ensemble skills including blend, balance, phrasing, stylistic interpretation, stage presence, and collaborative musicianship. Coursework includes rehearsals, sectional leadership opportunities, reflective listening assignments, and score study. Students will develop skills in organizing a gospel concert which will serve as culminating demonstrations of musical and scholarly growth.
Open to students by audition or instructor consent. Grading is based on rehearsal preparation, attendance, musical proficiency, written reflections, and performance participation. The ability to read music is not required, but helpful. Course can be repeated for credit.
