Overview of class

Voice for Shakespeare focuses on integrating the voice/speech/text work of Theatre 170 Voice for Performance with the more advanced voice and text work required for performing Shakespeare's plays in the theatre. Using the IPA symbols learned in Voice for Performance, students will become familiar with Shakespeare's use of alliteration and assonance which is the foundation for speaking Shakespeare's text in both verse and prose. They will also focus on applying the principles of Elizabethan rhetoric, verse speaking and prose to develop an understanding of Shakespeare's performance clues for actors imbedded in the text. Text work will begin with a group scene to free the voice and body for moving and sharing space with other actors on stage. Then each student will also work on an individual sonnet to be memorized as well as an individual monologue suitable for a professional audition, and a two-person scene to be presented in the final performance of all the work in class before an audience.

Registration Requirements

Prerequisite: THEA 170 Voice for Performance

Students must have taken Theatre 170 Voice for Performance in order to register for any upper level Voice for Performance class.

Permission numbers will not be issued to override the pre-requisite.

Enrollment Requirements: This class is open to theatre students only until the end of pre-registration, after which time enrollment will be open to everyone who has taken the prerequisites Students must have completed Theatre 170-0 in order to enroll.
