Overview of class

Students will investigate dramatic works encompassing a range of circumstances that evoke great mental and emotional anguish for the characters. Embodying this material is an opportunity to radically stretch one's range as an actor. It is also an invitation to gain greater empathy for the universality of human suffering; most immediately, your own suffering and the suffering of your neighbor. Students will engage in contextual research, text analysis, improvisation, and speech & scene study from ancient Greek tragedies and 17th - 21st century plays that contain elements of tragedy. Emphasis will be given to the following elements of drama: Ritual, Character, Story, Given Circumstances, Conflict/Argument, Unities (Action, Place, & Time), Scale (Ideas, Stakes, and Urgency), Vulnerability, Relationship, Irony, Realization, Catharsis, and Community.
