Overview of class

This course serves as a foundation in scenic design. Students will learn the scenic design process through an artistic and practical lens, as well as the role of the scenic designer within a theatrical production. The course examines how designers approach performance work and use a range of tools to develop aesthetic responses to text and staging.

Students will actively practice the core stages of the design process, including script analysis, concept development, research, drawing, drafting, and model making. The design process is explored step by step through weekly assignments that build on material covered in class.

Assignments will be reviewed through instructor and peer critique. Because scenic design is inherently collaborative, constructive criticism and group discussion are central to the course. Students are expected to participate actively, share ideas, and engage thoughtfully in dialogue to refine their work and deepen their design thinking.
