Overview of class
More than mirror images of culture, the media that populate our shared worlds are embedded within and constitutive of culture. This course offers students an introduction to different theoretical approaches to this intersection between media and culture, from critical race and queer theories to psychoanalysis and (post)structuralism. Through this course, students will be able to not only apply different schools of theory to media texts ranging from film to social media posts, but also think theoretically about form, place, and function relative to media and mediation's role in creating, understanding, and responding to our world.
