Overview of class
Intended for doctoral students, this course introduces key concepts and methods in Screen Cultures. Paying particular attention to the ways in which these concepts and methods cut across media, the course aims to trace connections while also emphasizing that issues and concepts may take different shape over time, across diverse social and cultural contexts, and among different media. Each week is devoted to a central concept in media studies and includes a set of readings devoted to casting that concept in multiple perspectives. Each week also includes a paired screening, with films and television shows spanning modes, genres, and national origins from across the last hundred years. The first half of each class session will be devoted to screening and the second half to discussion.
