Dances of the African Diaspora II (260-0-20)
Topic
Intermediate Improvisation
Meeting Info
Wirtz Center Ballroom: Mon, Wed 2:00PM - 3:20PM
Overview of class
Improvisation is more than spontaneous movement: it is a practice of radical presence, vulnerability, and agency. This intermediate level course explores improvisation as a strategy for survival, liberation, and creativity. Students will engage task-based scores, somatic practices, and collaborative experiments that challenge conventional ideas of choreography and performance. Readings and viewings from dance artists, critical theorists, and cultural practitioners will situate improvisation within a broader context of Black fugitivity, queer embodiment, and contemporary performance.
